About Us
Hi! I am Reubin, the owner & director of Renew Construction Limited. This is my magic story.
Growing up in the small Waikato town of Te Aroha, I was always passionate about sports, particularly rugby and American football. Academics weren't my strong suit, but my love for physical activity led me to pursue a career in the building industry. Throughout my BCITO apprenticeship I discovered the immense satisfaction I felt from finishing a project, the sense of achievement in standing back to survey something that I had hand crafted, something that did not exist until I built it. That feeling was second to none - I just didn’t think any other job would provide that fulfilment for me.
Over the course of those first ten years of my building career and achieving my National Certificate in Carpentry, I worked on various industrial maintenance projects, light commercial work, residential renovations, and new homes. My journey to becoming an experienced builder was filled with personal achievements, from representing Thames Valley Heartland in rugby to captaining championship-winning teams in both rugby and American football. This was not without bumps in the road, the biggest being a dislocated knee and complete tears of my ACL, PCL and Post lateral corner ligaments in a rugby injury. With stubborn determination (and a lot of time in the gym) I got back into my contact sports and building career. This injury did however make me consider my future and where I was likely to be in 10- 20 years down the track (hello arthritis), so with the support of my Fiancée I enrolled into Wintec full time to complete my New Zealand Diploma in Quantity Surveying.
Quantity Surveying was a step into the realm of construction management. I spent 7 years in commercial construction and over this time I worked on a range of projects including the Firth Block Plant in Hanua, City Focus upgrade in Rotorua including the upgrade of Kuirau Park, Kmart extension in central Hamilton, new Mainfreight distribution centres in Levin and Gore – which I completed at the same time as a new warehouse and office space in Wellington for Quay Investments, with my last project in this realm being the Kmart distribution center in Ruakura Superhub Hamilton. The skills that I attained during my study and time as a Quantity Surveyor were immense. Cost estimation, measurement and quantification, risk management, contract management, value engineering and stellar communication skills are all now in my tool belt and ultimately enable me to deliver successful project outcomes that meet my client’s expectations within their budget.
During my time as a Quantity Surveyor, I married my now wife Alana (super supportive Fiancee mentioned previously) and introduce our two children, Remy & Tohrben, to the world. With my family growing and now being retired from sports, I turned my focus once again to my future and what was next. I missed the detail, I missed the gratification of the hands-on work, I missed the personal connection with clients when projects are completed, and the satisfaction felt by both client and myself of the finished product. I figured, you know what, I have the on-site skills, I have the off-site skills, I need to give this a go. So after many conversations between my wife and I we did it, in 2022 Renew Construction Limited was formed.
